It has been a little over a year since France implemented a ban on the Burka in their country. They cited security risks and the "enslavement of women" as their reasoning behind the decision. The law received a lot of support in France and, while there were protests initially, the ban has been effective and without much brouhaha since.
Personally, I also support France's movement to eliminate the Burka.
First, the Koran does not indicate that this type of dress is required of Muslim women. It is a rule created by men. While many women claim that they "choose" to wear the Burka, it is not clear as subtle domination and fear-inducing threats over a lifetime can make force look like free will.
In many situations of domestic violence, a woman will defend her abuser. It doesn't make is less wrong to beat another person.
More importantly, radical religion is threatening traditional Western culture. By taking advantage of Western "rights" and liberties, religious zealots are effectively infiltrating Western culture. This is particularly true in places like France where their borders make it easy for Muslims to enter and not assimilate to French culture. America's geographic isolation makes her less effected by this reality.
Banning the Burka is not an infringement on religion because it is not commanded by the Koran. Apparently, suicide bombing is part of some Muslims religious practice...should we allow that as well in the name of practicing religion?
Tolerance is not always the highest virtue. After all, no one has much respect for the onlooker who is "tolerant" of a bully.
Ban the Burka.
